2020 Oceania Track Championships return to Invercargill

The Oceania Cycling Confederation (OCC) is pleased to announce the 2020 Oceania Track Cycling Championships will be held in Invercargill, New Zealand, October 16-19, 2019.

Having last hosted the Championships in 2015, Oceania’s best track cyclists will return to the world’s southern-most velodrome in October. More than 200 riders are expected for the four-day competition where 40 titles will be awarded across elite and under 19 categories for men and women.

The awarding of the 2020 Oceania Track Championships follows Cycling New Zealand’s successful hosting of round five of the 2018/19 Tissot UCI Track World Cup in January. The Oceania Track Championships alternate between Australia and New Zealand providing a platform for growth in track cycling in both nations and Oceania.

President of the Oceania Cycling Confederation and Member of the Union Cycliste Internationale Management Committee Tracey Gaudry said, “The UCI and Oceania Cycling Confederation are delighted to award the 2020 Oceania Track Championships to Invercargill, New Zealand, with the city a strong supporter of cycling and regular host of Oceania Championships on track and road and host of the 2012 UCI Junior Track World Championships.

“The 2020 Oceania Track Championships form part of the two-year Olympic qualifying cycle ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, giving riders from the Oceania region the opportunity to secure qualifying points on home soil.

“The OCC thanks Cycling New Zealand and Cycling Southland for their support in hosting the championships and we are pleased to announce the location and dates well in advance to maximise the opportunity for riders to take part.”

Cycling New Zealand Interim CEO Jacques Landry said, “Cycling New Zealand are pleased to welcome and support the return of the Oceania Track Championships to Cycling Southland. We know that Invercargill and wider Southland community are strong cycling supporters and will be excited to have international cycling back in the region once again.

“We are looking forward to working with the experienced team from Cycling Southland to deliver another world class event on New Zealand soil.”

Cycling Southland General Manager Nicola Wills said, “This is the first international event we’ve had since we last hosted the Oceania Championships in 2015 at the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome in Invercargill.

“We know our wealth of riders, supporters and the many public fans of track cycling that we have in the south will be eager to witness the action first-hand and cheer on their favourite Kiwis.”

UCI Continental Championships are the highest ranked international Championships in track cycling after the UCI World Championships.

More details including a provisional program and entry information will be published later in the year.

The Championships are subject to finalisation of a host agreement between Oceania Cycling Confederation and Cycling New Zealand.
