Botha and Wollaston add more gold as Clonan and Cornish claim maiden crowns on day three of 2022 Oceania Track Championships
Five Oceania Championship Records were recorded on day three of the 2022 Oceania Track Championships at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane. Part of the inaugural combined Oceania Championships in Brisbane, Queensland hosted by the Oceania Cycling Confederation, AusCycling, Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane Economic Development Agency from 19 March – April 11, 2022, as a part of the Brisbane Cycling Festival presented by King St.
Bryony Botha and Ally Wollaston of New Zealand each won two gold to bring their tally to three. Kristina Clonan (Australia) broke through for her first Oceania title on the track, and Thomas Cornish set a Championship Record in the 500m and 1km time trials respectively.
Having claimed silver medals in the sprint and keirin, Kristina Clonan (Australia) produced two flying laps of the velodrome to stop the clock in 33.143secs in the women’s 500m time trial. The new Championship Record time was nearly a second clear of the rest of the field. Silver went to Tokyo BMX Olympian Rebecca Petch in 34.077secs as Brenna Hargrave completed the podium in 34.101secs.
New Zealand’s Bryony Botha and Ally Wollaston who had each won a title at these Championships were in dominant form to take out the Madison, scoring in nine of the ten sprint to claim gold on 45 points. More than double the score of silver medallists Sophie Edwards and Chloe Moran of Australia, with Alex Martin-Wallace and Amber Pate rounding out the podium.
Botha and Wollaston then combined with to earn another title Prudence Fowler and Ella Wyllie in the team pursuit with a time of 4mins 17.302secs, three and a half clear of Sophie Edwards, Alex Martin-Wallace, Alyssa Polities and Amber Pate (Australia).
Thomas Cornish of Australia clocked a sub one minute kilo to claim gold in 59.599secs in a new Oceania Championship Record, half a second clear of Nick Kergozou (New Zealand) with Dylan Eather (Australia completing the podium.
In the men’s Madison Conor Leahy and Josh Duffy (Australia) won the final double points sprint to take their tally to 54 and with it the gold ahead of Tom Sexton and Aaron Gate of New Zealand on 51, with Blake Agnoletto and Oliver Bleddyn (Australia) rounding out the top three on 48.
Leahy and Duffy combined with Graeme Frislie and James Moriarty to win the team pursuit in the fastest time at an Oceania Championships of 3mins 51.245secs, with Oliver Bleddyn part of qualifying. New Zealand collected silver with Nick Kergozou, Dan Bridgwater, Tom Sexton, Keegan Hornblow and George Jackson. Blake Agnoletto, Liam Walsh, Jordan Villani and Devraj Singh Grewal collected bronze.
In under 19 events. Luke Blackwood (New Zealand) collected gold in the 1km time trial, Australia’s Leo Zimmermann, Dylan Proctor-Parker, Noah Blannin and Tarun Cook won the team pursuit in a new Championship Record of 4mins 8.723secs and Joel Douglas and Edward Pawson of New Zealand claimed the Madison. Tyler Puzicha (Australia) set a new Oceania Championship Record 35.584 secs to win the 500m time trial, Meg Marker and Kiera Will claimed the Madison for Australia and then combined with Sophie Sutton and Summer Nordmeyer to win the team pursuit.
In the para time trials Nicole Murray C5 (New Zealand), Emily Petricola C4 (Australia), Paige Greco C3 (Australia) and Amanda Reid C2 (Australia) won gold in the women’s. While Michael Shippley C5 (Australia), Devon Briggs C4 (New Zealand), Kyle Willis C3 (Australia) and Gordan Allan C2 (Australia) took out the men’s with tandem gold going to Jessica Gallagher and Caitlin Ward (Australia)
