Bryony Botha breaks Oceania Record on route to fifth Oceania individual pursuit title
Bryony Botha (New Zealand) broke the Oceania individual pursuit record twice on route to her fifth consecutive gold in the event on day two of the 2026 Oceania Track Championships in Cambridge, New Zealand.
Tom Sexton made it a double gold pursuit day for New Zealand. The fastest qualifiers in the sprint Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand) and Leigh Hoffman are through to the semi finals, with Hoffman setting a Champion Record on the way.
Australia also took two gold courtesy of Keira Will and Thomas Cornish winning the elite scratch races.
Individual Pursuit
World Championship medallist Botha produced another true Botha performance breaking the Oceania Record twice on route to gold. The dual Olympian set a time of 4mins 29.111secs in the final to claim her fifth consecutive elite women’s title. Improving on her time of 4mins 29.306secs from qualifying to overtake teammate Prudence Fowler who collected silver.
The race for bronze went down to the wire with the lead changing across the race with Claudia Marcks proving strongest in the final kilometre to take bronze, in 4mins 38.772secs. Repeating her performance from 2023 when she also took the final spot on the podium and the only Australian to stand on the podium in the last four years.
New Zealand produced a total lockout in the men’s with Tom Sexton defending his title in 4mins 9.421secs ahead of Marshall Erwood (4:09.800). Bronze went to Keegan Hornblow in 4mins 11.881secs.
Earlier in the day Sexton had come just a tenth of a second outside the Oceania Championship and New Zealand Record in qualifying with a time of 4mins 6.582secs, just shy of Aaron Gate’s 4mins 6.468secs set two years ago.
Sprint
Australia’s Leigh Hoffman made a strong start to the sprint by qualifying fastest in a new Oceania Championship Record time of 9.439 secs ahead of countryman Tayte Ryan in 9.728, with five riders going under 10 seconds.
He dispatched Finn Carpenter (Australia) and Xavier Bland (Australia) in the 1/8 and quarterfinals and will face Daniel Barber in the semifinal on Thursday. Ryan Elliott (Australia) produced a strong showing in the quarterfinal beating second fastest qualifier Ryan to book his spot in the next round and will come up against James Brister (Australia).
Olympic Champion Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand) was dominant, qualifying fastest in 10.632 seconds before wins over Hope Harnetty (Australia) and Sophie Watts (Australia) in the next two rounds secured her a spot in the semi final against Molly McGill (Australia) tomorrow.
Second fastest qualifier Alessia McCaig (Australia) also breezed through the 1/8 and quarterfinals and will meet Olivia King (New Zealand) tomorrow for a spot in the gold medal ride.
Scratch Race
In an effort to add another gold to her collection Botha hit out with one kilometre to go only to be reeled in over the final two laps. Kiera Will (Australia) claimed the sprint ahead of Samantha Donnelly (New Zealand) and Botha who added bronze.
A powerful sprint from Thomas Cornish (Australia) earned him the men’s title over New Zealand’s George Jackson and Nick Kergozou.
Under 19
New Zealand’s Lily Keast earned victory in the under 19 women’s elimination race ahead of Sienna Monteith (Australia) and Shaylah Sayers (New Zealand).
Later in the scratch race Monteith converted silver into gold ahead of Monteith who picked up medal number two of the day and Megan Moore (Australia).
In the under 19 men’s elimination race is Oliver Ward (Australia) taking the top spot on the podium ahead of Benson Boys (New Zealand) and William Brown (Australia).
Much like the women’s scratch race Boys moved to the top step of the podium, with silver to Samuel Hilditch (Australia) and Brown earned another bronze.
