Ellesse Andrews sets world record on route to sweep of women’s sprint events

Olympic Champion Ellesse Andrews wrote her name further into the record books breaking the world record in the women’s kilo and becoming the first person in history to sweep the sprint events at an Oceania Championships.

Andrews took no time at all to obliterate the kilo world record in qualifying stopping the clock in 1min 4.697secs in qualifying to take her place in history as the first woman to go under one minute and five seconds over one kilometre.

In the final Andrews nudged the one minute and five second time with 1min 5.025secs to claim victory by two seconds in less than ideal conditions. Silver went to Andrews Olympic teammate Shaane Fulton with Australia’s Claudia Marks rounding out the podium.

With her resounding win and victories in the sprint, keirin and team sprint the 25-year-old became the first person in history to win all four events at a single Oceania Championships.
