The Oceania Cycling Confederation (OCC) is delighted to announce the inaugural Oceania BMX Freestyle Championships will be held in Melbourne, Australia, 7 December 2019 with hosting rights awarded to Cycling Australia.

BMX Freestyle is a BMX discipline where riders perform routines which consist of sequences of executing tricks on ramps and are judged on the quality of their performance (difficulty, originality and style). It will make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Championships will be the first UCI sanctioned Continental Championships in the discipline of BMX Freestyle in the world.  BMX Freestyle joins Track, Road, Mountain Bike and BMX Racing as the fifth Oceania Continental Championship.

Inaugural World Champion in 2017 Logan Martin (Australia) and 2018 World Championship medallist Brandon Loupos (Australia) are among Oceania’s stars who are expected to contest the Championships. Five riders from Oceania are currently ranked inside the top 20 in the world across men’s and women’s UCI rankings.

To be held at Rampfest Indoor Skate Park, located in Melbourne’s Inner West, the Championships will see elite men’s and women’s titles awarded across a day-long competition.

President of the Oceania Cycling Confederation and Member of the Union Cycliste Internationale Management Committee Tracey Gaudry said, “The UCI and Oceania Cycling Confederation are delighted to award the hosting rights for the inaugural Oceania BMX Freestyle Championships to Cycling Australia. The first UCI Continental Championships in the BMX Freestyle discipline anywhere in the world is to be held in Melbourne, Australia.

“Oceania riders have already impressed on the world stage including the inaugural world champion Logan Martin.  We look forward to witnessing the world’s best compete and introduce this exciting UCI cycling discipline to the public.

“With BMX Freestyle in the Olympic program for the first time at Tokyo 2020, the 2019 Oceania Championships provides an exceptional opportunity for riders across Oceania to compete in our region, and secure qualifying points for Tokyo.

Cycling Australia Chief Executive Officer Steve Drake said, “Cycling Australia is excited that Melbourne will play host to the Oceania Championships.

“After the success of the inaugural BMX Freestyle Nationals also held in Melbourne last November, and with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games little more than a year away, this is another great opportunity for our athletes to compete and hone their skills in world class events on their home soil.”

The Oceania Championships are part of the UCI Continental Championships series, the highest ranked UCI Championship events in cycling after the UCI World Championships.

The 2020 Oceania Track Championships will be held in Invercargill 16-19 October 2019. Details of the 2020 Oceania Championships for Road, BMX and Mountain Bike will be announced later in 2019.
