Wollaston and Gate win their fourth title as Andrews and Glaetzer add third at 2022 Oceania Track Championships
New Zealand’s Ally Wollaston and Aaron Gate won the women’s and men’s omnium to claim their fourth Oceania Championship title of the week on the final day of competition at the 2022 Oceania Track Championships at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane. Part of the inaugural combined Oceania Championships in Brisbane, Queensland hosted by the Oceania Cycling Confederation, AusCycling, Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane Economic Development Agency from 19 March – April 11, 2022, as a part of the Brisbane Cycling Festival presented by King St.
Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand) and Matt Glaetzer (Australia) lead their respective nations to team sprint success and their third title of the week after claiming sprint and keirin gold earlier in the Championships.
Ally Wollaston of New Zealand used consistency and speed to win the women’s omnium and pull on the Oceania Champions jersey for the fourth time this week. A win in the elimination race following top four finishes in the scratch and tempo races saw her two points off the lead with the points race to go. Her quick turn of speed was evident as she picked up points in all eight sprints to finish on 143 points, nine clear of teammate Bryony Botha with bronze medallist Sophie Edwards (Australia) a further nine back.
New Zealand claimed the first women’s team sprint held with three riders over 750 metres. Lead by sprint and keirin winner Ellesse Andrews who combined with Rebecca Petch and Olivia King to set a time of 47.589, lowering the Oceania Record they set at the New Zealand Championships earlier this year. Kristina Clonan, Alessia McCaig and Breanna Hargrave (Australia) earned silver and Kalinda Robinson, Molly McGill and Jacqui Mengler-Mohr (Australia) bronze.
New Zealand’s Aaron Gate produced another dominant display to claim his fourth gold of the week. There was no stopping Gate to another Oceania title in the omnium, having previously tasted success in the event at the 2017 Championships. After finishing third and fourth in the scratch and tempo races, Gate won the elimination to sit second ahead of the all-important points race, where he unleashed his experience to again dominant and finish on 171 points. Silver went to George Jackson (New Zealand) and Graeme Frislie (Australia) completing the podium.
Sprint and keirin Champion Matt Glaetzer, time trial Champion Thomas Cornish combined with dual silver medallist Matt Richardson to take out the men’s team sprint. Their time of 42.629 was a Championship Record and ended New Zealand’s run in the event, having claimed the last seven titles. Sam Dakin, Bradly Knipe and Patrick Clancy took silver for New Zealand as John Trovas, Sam Gallagher and James Brister (Australia) completed the podium.
In the under 19 team sprint Emma Stevens, Tyler Puzicha and Lily Stratford (Australia) set an Oceania Record in the women’s on route to gold, while Jayden Stanton-Keir, Maxwell Liebeknecht and Ryan Elliott (Australia) set a new Oceania Championship Record of 45.873secs in the men’s. Meg Marker (Australia) and Joel Douglas (New Zealand) claimed the under 19 omnium titles.
In the para individual pursuits Nicole Murray C5 (New Zealand), Meg Lemon C4 (Australia), Paige Greco C3 (Australia) and Amanda Reid C2 (Australia) won the women’s titles, Alistair Donohoe C5 (Australia), Devon Briggs C4 (New Zealand), Kyle Willis C3 (Australia) and Darren Hicks C2 (Australia) the men’s and Candice Kennedy and Kelly Fettes (Australia) claimed the tandem.
